Face Value of a Number

The face value of a digit in a number is the value of that digit itself. The face value of any digit in a number is independent of its place in the number.

Example:

Consider any three-digit number. Say 731.

For the number 408,

For the number 560,

 

Place Value in Maths

In a number, the place value of a digit depends on its position in the number. Place value allows us to represent any number using the digits 0 to 9.

Example:

Let us discuss place value with some three-digit numbers.

For the number 568.

For the number 904,

For the number 660,

Expanded Form

When any number is written as the sum of the place values of its digits, then it is called the expanded form of the number.

Example:

Let us discuss with a number 456. In 456,

Similarly, expanded form of 440 and 103 is

440 = 400 + 40 + 0

103 = 100 + 0 + 3
