Spatial Sense Near and Far

The concept will allow the learners to identify the distance between two objects or people. The student will learn to specify near and far objects in their surroundings.

Also, the students will learn to identify

  • nearer and farther objects among two or more objects
  • nearest and farthest among two or more objects

Each concept is explained to class 1 maths students with examples and illustrations, and a concept map is given at the end to summarize the idea. At the end of the page, two printable near and far worksheets with solutions are attached for students to practice.

Near and far

When we see anything, we find that either near to us or far away from us. Let us understand what is Near and what is Far. Look at the following picture.

The boy is at a short distance from the tree. The boy is near to the tree.

The cat is at a long distance from the tree. The cat is far from the tree.

  • The object is located at a short distance – The object is near.
  • The object is located at a long distance – The object is far away.

New Word:

Distance: Have you got an idea about what distance is?

Distance is the amount of space between two objects. It tells us how far one thing is from another thing.

We do not use the words ‘near’ or ‘far’ to compare distances. Then which word we should use here? Let’s learn about it.

Nearer and Farther

To compare the distances of two objects from a third object, we use the words Nearer or Farther.

The boy is at a shorter distance from the tree than the bird. The boy is nearer to the tree than the bird.

The bird is at a longer distance from the tree than the boy. The bird is farther from the tree than the boy.

  • The object is located at a longer distance than the other object- the object is farther than the other object.
  • The object is located at a shorter distance than the other object- the object is nearer than the other object.

Did you know?

The sun and the moon appear at the same distance from us, but the sun is farther away than the moon. The sun is too far from the moon.

Let us learn about the words used for comparing the distances of more than two objects.

Nearest and Farthest

To compare distances of three or more objects, we use the words Nearest or Farthest.

The mouse is at the shortest distance from the tree among all the animals. The mouse is the nearest to the tree.

The dog is at the longest distance from the tree among all the animals. The dog is the farthest from the tree.

  • The object is at the shortest distance among all – The object is the nearest.
  • The object is at the longest distance among all – The object is the farthest.
