Measuring Temperature

Through the concept of temperature measurement, we can measure the temperature of any object. Here students will learn the relation between Celsius and Fahrenheit scales.
In this learning concept, the students will also learn to

  • Classify the difference between the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales.
  • Define the temperature measurement units and temperature measuring instruments.
  • Evaluate Fahrenheit to Celsius scale and Celsius to Fahrenheit scale.

Each concept is explained to class 4 maths students using illustrations, examples, and mind maps. Students can assess their learning by solving the two printable worksheets given at the page’s end.

Download the temperature measurement worksheet for class 4 and check the solutions to the temperature measurement questions for class 4 provided in PDF format.

Definition:

Temperature describes the hotness and coldness of an object or a body in some units.

Example:

temperature measurement
  • Temperature helps us to measure the difference between hot and cold by measuring temperature.
  • Measurement of temperature is a process.
  • We measured this temperature with thermometers.

Temperature Measuring Instruments:

temperature measurement instruments
  • In thermometer temperature can measure by two units
    1. Celsius
    2. Fahrenheit

1. Celsius scale:

We use the symbol ‘°C’ for the Celsius scale.

Celsius scale

Example:Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C.

 temperature measurement

2. Fahrenheit scale:

We use the symbol ‘°F’ for the Fahrenheit scale.

Fahrenheit scale

Example:Water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F.

temperature measurement

The Celsius scale is used more than the Fahrenheit scale to measure temperature.

Difference Between Celsius and Fahrenheit Scale:

temperature measurement
  • Temperature can be converted from one scale to another scale.
  • We can say this as temperature conversion.
  • In temperature conversion temperature changes one unit to another unit.

Relation Between Celsius and Fahrenheit Scale:

We can change the temperature Celsius scale to Fahrenheit scale also Fahrenheit scale to Celsius scale.

Celsius to Fahrenheit scale

Celsius to Fahrenheit Scale:

Step 1: 1st we multiply 9 with the given temperature in degrees.

Step 2: Now the value which we get from step 1 is divided by 5.

Step 3: Last we add 32 with the quotient which we get from step 2.

Step 4: Finally, we get the temperature on the Fahrenheit scale.

Example:45°C

Now we convert 45°C to the Fahrenheit scale.

Step 1: 1st we multiply 45 by 9
45 × 9 = 405

Step 2: Then, we divide 405 by 5
405 ÷ 5 = 81

Step 3: Now, we add 32 with 81.
32 + 81 = 113

Step 4: So, the final answer is 113.
Therefore, 45°C = 113°F

So, the rule is:

Celsius to Fahrenheit scale
Celsius to Fahrenheit scale

In formula form we have,

Celsius to Fahrenheit scale

Fahrenheit to Celsius Scale

Step 1: 1st we subtract 32 from the given temperature in degrees.

Step 2: Then we multiply by 5 with the number which we get in step 1.

Step 3: Last we divide the number by 9 which we get in step 2.

Step 4: Finally, we get the temperature on the Celsius scale.

Example: 167°F

Now we convert 167°F on the Celsius scale.

Step 1: 1st we subtract 32 from 167.
167 – 32 = 135

Step 2: Now we multiply 135 by 5.
135 × 5 = 675

Step 3: Lastly, we divide 675 by 9.
675 ÷ 9 = 75

Step 4: So, the final result is 75.
Therefore, 167°F = 75°C
