Numbers Comparing Numbers for Class 1 Maths

The student will learn to compare one or two-digit numbers and also get to know about the concept of the bigger and smaller number.

In this learning concept, the students will get to know about

  • Compare two numbers
  • Bigger and smaller numbers

Each concept is explained to students using examples, and illustrations and a concept map are given at the end to summarize the idea. At the end of page two, printable comparing numbers worksheets with solutions for class 1 maths are attached for students to practice.

We have learned counting numbers. Now we will learn to compare numbers as smaller and bigger numbers.

  • Here, we can easily see that number of 10 ice-creams is more than number of 5 ice-creams.
  • So, 5 is smaller number and 10 is bigger number.

Bigger and Smaller Numbers

Smaller number: The number which comes before another number is the smaller number among them.

Bigger number: The number which comes after another number is the bigger number among them

Example:   Compare 13 and 56.

  • Count the numbers from 1 to 56.
  • From the number table, we can easily see that number 13 comes before 56. So, 13 is the smallest number.
  • 56 is comes after 13, so 56 is biggest number.

We can compare numbers by counting their digits.

One-digit numbers: 1 to 9

Two-digit numbers: 11 to 99

Three-digit numbers: 100

Compare Two Numbers

1.Comparing one-digit numbers

Smaller number: the number comes before

Bigger number: the number comes before

Example:

2.Comparing one-digit numbers and two-digit numbers

One-digit numbers come before two-digits number. So, while comparing one-digit and two-digit numbers;

Smaller number: One-digit number

Bigger number: Two-digit number

Example:
3.Comparing two-digit numbers

Case 1: From the left side, compare the numbers at first digit.

Smaller number: The number with the smaller first digit is the smaller number.

Bigger number: The number with the bigger first digit is the bigger number.

Example:

First digit numbers are 7 and 4, in which 4 is smaller than 7. So:

Smaller number: 47

Bigger number: 78

Here, 47 comes before 78.

Case 2: If the first digits are same, then compare the next digits.

Example:

First digits are same the number 5. So, compare the next digits.

second digits are 1 and 9, in which 1 is smaller than 9. So:

Smaller number: 51

Bigger number: 59

Here, 51 comes before 59.

4.Comparing one-digit/two-digit numbers and the number hundred.

All one-digit and two-digit numbers come before the number 100. So:
Smaller number: One-digit number/ two-digit number.

Bigger number: Number 100.
