We have learned about the arithmetic operations, i.e., addition subtraction, multiplication, and division. You know how to solve each of the operations separately. Let us learn how to solve these arithmetic operations when placed together.

 Order of Operations

• Order of operations is the rule which states about the sequence in which the multiple operations in an expression should be performed.
• The correct order is:
  1. Solve the brackets.
  2. Solve the “OF”
  3. Solve the division.
  4. Solve the multiplication.
  5. Solve the addition.
  6. Solve the subtraction.

Following are the steps to be followed while solving the arithmetic expression:

Step 1: Solve the terms in the brackets.

Step 2: Solve “OF” after “BRACKET”.

Step 3: Solve “DIVISION” after “OF”.

Step 4:Solve “MULTIPLICATION” after “DIVISION”.

Step 5: Solve “ADDITION” after “MULTIPLICATION”.

Step 6: Solve “SUBTRACTION” after “ADDITION”.

Example:

Solve the arithmetic expression 24 + (2 × 14) ÷ 7 – 12

Solution:

Follow the BODMAS rule to solve the given expression.
The given expression includes brackets, division, addition and subtraction.

The order of operations should be:

• Brackets
• Division
• Addition
• Subtraction

Step 1: Multiply the terms in the brackets.
24 + (2 × 14) ÷ 7 – 12
= 24 + 28 ÷ 7

Step 2:Divide 28 by 7
28 + 28 ÷ 7 – 12
= 28 + 4

Step 3:Add 28 and 4
28 + 4 – 12
= 32 – 12

Step 4:Subtract 12 from 32
32 – 12
= 20

Therefore, the answer is 20.
