Over the years, the lifestyle of humans has changed gradually. Food, shelter, and clothing are the three essential necessities of humans. The following concept will allow the students to learn about the house and clothing.

After going through the concept, the learners will be able to:

• Explain the meaning and necessity of a house.
• Describe different types of clothes.
• Give examples of mobile houses like the igloo and caravan.
• Differentiate between Kutcha house and Pucca house.

What is Shelter?

• A shelter is where we live to protect us from animals, cold weather, rain, thunderstorms, harsh sunlight and other dangers.
• A shelter protects us from our surroundings and keeps us safe.
• We also keep our valuable belongings inside our shelters.

Types of Shelter:

Pucca House:

• In permanent shelters, we can live for a long time.
• These are made with bricks, concrete, cement, sand, etc.
• They do not get damaged during natural disasters.
• Permanent shelters are also called pucca houses.

a)Villas and Bungalows:

• Villas and bungalows are permanent shelters made with bricks and concrete.
• These types of houses usually have two to three floors.
• Bungalows have balconies and sloping roofs.

 

b) Multi-storeyed buildings and skyscrapers:

• These types of permanent shelters are found in cities.
• Many people can live together in multi-storeyed buildings and skyscrapers.
• Multi-storeyed buildings have 10 to 20 floors, but a skyscraper should have at least 100 floors.
• Each floor has separate apartments for living.
• An apartment has 3 to 5 rooms for different purposes like cooking, bathing, sleeping, relaxing, having food with the family, studying, and many more.

 

c) Wooden Houses:

• These houses are made with wood and can be one or two-storied.
• Wooden houses usually have sloping roofs.
• These types of shelters keep us warm in winter and cool in summer.

 

Kutcha House:

• Temporary shelters are made when people want to live there for a specific duration.
• These are makeshift houses that can be replaced at other places.
• Such houses are not durable enough and get easily damaged during natural disasters.
• Some temporary houses are made with mud, stones, straw, etc.
• Temporary houses are also called kutcha houses.

 

a) Tent House:

• These are movable shelters made with thin and light fabric.
• They are made for holiday camping and protect us from rain and sun.
• A few people can live inside a tent.

 

b) Caravan:

• Caravans are also called ‘houses on wheels’.
• People can move from one place to another place on caravans.
• Caravans look like big cars or trucks with all basic facilities like bed, sink, toilet, kitchen top, etc.

 

c) Houseboat:

• Houseboats are called floating houses as they float on closed water bodies.
• Houseboats are usually for tourists.
• They are of different sizes.

 

d) Igloo:

• Igloos are made in extremely cold places with solid ice blocks.
• Igloos are dome-shaped, and these shelters keep people warm in cold conditions.

 

e) Hut:

• Huts are usually seen in the villages.
• These are made with mud, hay, straw, tree branches, husk, gunny bags, etc.

Clothing:

Clothes are an essential need for all human beings.

Why Do We Need Clothes?

• Clothes cover our bodies.
• They protect us from harsh weather like heat, rain, and dust.
• Clothes protect our skin from insect bites.

 

Types of Clothes Used During Summers:

• In summer, we wear light cotton clothes.
• We wear comfortable and loose clothes.
• We also wear caps to protect our heads from the sun.

 

Types of Clothes Used During the Rainy Season:

• During the rainy season, we wear raincoats and umbrellas.
• When places get waterlogged due to heavy rain, we use boots.

 

Types of Clothes Used During the Winter Season:

• During the winter season, we use woollen clothes.
• These clothes protect us from extreme cold.
• We wear woollen shirts, sweaters, caps, pants, socks, shawls, gloves and jackets during winters.
