A group of people living together who are related to each other makes a family. A family can be a nuclear family or an extended family.
The following concept will introduce the learners to what a family is, its importance, and the different members and relations in the family.
After reading the concept, students will be able to:
- Identify different relations between family members.
- Know about the difference between joint family and nuclear family.
- Differentiate between maternal relations and paternal relatives, etc.

The World Around Us:
- Humans are social animals and live with a family in society.
- We require a home to live in and protect ourselves.
- Every family member is related to us in some way or another.
Family:
- A group of people living together who are related to each other by marriage, birth or adoption is called a family.
- A family can be nuclear or joint based on the number of family members living together.
Nuclear Family:
- A small family comprising parents and children.
Joint Family:
- A large family comprising parents, grandparents, children and relatives who live together.
Relations in a Family:
- People living together are associated with each other by one or the other relations. Let us see them in the following table—

- The members of a family can be depicted using a diagram called a family tree.
Neighbourhood:
- The people who live beside our house are neighbours.
- The areas around our house and the people living there constitute our neighbourhood.
- People in our neighbourhood give us feelings of community and harmony.
- We celebrate festivals together and help each other in times of need.
Pets:
- The animals that live with us like other family members are called pets.
- Dogs, cats, parrots, sparrows, and rabbits are some animals kept as pets.
- Pets require food, regular doctor visits and clean surrounding to live properly.
Caring About Each Other:
- Living in a family helps us to grow in the presence of ample resources and feel safe.
- Our parents take care of us and our needs.
- As family members, we should take care of our younger siblings and old grandparents.
