We go to various places and meet different people every day. It is necessary to stay alert and follow safety rules to avoid mishaps. This concept teaches the learners the safety measures to be followed at familiar places like inside and outside the home, school, playground, etc.

After going through the concept, the learners will be able to:

  • Explain the meaning and necessity of safety rules.
  • Enlist safety rules at school.
  • State the importance of Road Safety rules.
  • Describe the measures to be taken to ensure safety at home.
  • Give reasons for the use of Zebra crossing.

What is Safety?

  • Safety means being free from any accident or any danger.
  • We need to follow specific rules to keep ourselves safe.
  • It will allow us to avoid accidents and injuries.

Safety at Home:

1. Do Not Play with Sharp and Heavy Things:

    Do you see the following objects at home?

  • All these things are very useful for us.
  • You should not pick or handle these things alone.
  • They have sharp edges that can cut your hand and hurt you.
  • Hammer is a weighty thing that you should not touch. It can hurt you if it suddenly falls on your hands or legs.

 

2. Do Not Light Matchsticks and Candles on Your Own:
  • Do not play with fire because it can hurt you.
  • Fire causes burns which can cause pain and damage your body parts.

 

3. Do Not Play with Electric Plug Points and Switches:
  • Do not play with switches and electric plug points at home.
  • Those may give you electric shocks, and you will get hurt.
  • Never switch on anything with wet hands.
  • If you want to turn on the television or a music system, ask for help from yours parents.

 

4. Do Not Play in the Kitchen:

  • The place where we cook food on the stove and store our daily groceries and utensils is called the kitchen.
  • While cooking, we use gas burners; if you play near the flame, you may hurt yourself.
  • You must stay away from the knives and peelers used in the kitchen.
 
5. Do Not Open the Door to an Unknown Person:
  • We all know our family members like our friends, relatives, and those who often visit us.
  • We should check through the eye hole first before opening the door.
  • If the visitor is unknown, we should call our parents.
  • It is not good to open the door to unknown people because we never know who they are; they could be bad people trying to cause harm.

 

Dos and Don’ts Outside the Home:

1. Do not Accept Candies and Toffees from Strangers:
  • If suddenly an unknown person is behaving nicely and offering you toffees and candies, be very careful.
  • They might be bad people who can harm you.
 
2. Do Follow All the Rules of the Game:
  • When you are playing a game with your friends, do not cheat and follow all the rules of the game.
  • Do tell others if someone is cheating in the game.
  • If you cheat in the game, your friends will start to dislike you, and they will not call you to join a game in the future.
 
3. Do Not Go Outside Without Your Shoes:
  • Do not forget to wear your shoes whenever you go outside your home.
  • If you do not cover your feet properly while playing, they may get dirty, and pointed objects like glass pieces may get stuck in your feet.
  • Do not forget to leave your shoes after reaching home and wash your feet properly before entering your room.

 

Road Safety

1. Always Go Out with Your Parents:
  • If you go outside your home, always go with your parents.
  • If your parents are not there, go out with the other family members, like your grandmother or grandfather.
  • While walking, always hold their hands properly.
 
2. Always Walk on the Footpath and Not on the Road:
  • Do not walk on the streets and always take the footpath or sidewalk.
  • Roads are for the vehicles to move.
 
3. Keep Distance from Running Vehicles:
  • Always keep a distance from running vehicles.
  • Sometimes harsh drivers overtake other vehicles and cause accidents.
  • That is why always use the footpath while walking and maintain distance from the road.
 
4. Use Zebra Crossing While Crossing the Road:
  • When you cross the road, always use the zebra crossing.
  • Some parts of the road are painted with white stripes that appear like the body stripes of a zebra. It is called the zebra crossing.

 

Safety Rules While Riding a Bus:

1. Allow the Bus to Stop Before You Get into it:
  • Do not rush.
  • Just wait for the bus to stop, then ride on the bus.
  • Always wait for your bus at the bus stop only.
 
2. Always Make a Line to Get into the Bus:
  • When the bus stops, make a line to get on the bus.
  • Do not rush to ride on the bus.
 
3. Do Not Put Your Head or Arms Out on a Moving Bus:
  • Putting your head or hands out on a bus may hurt you.
  • Sit properly, and when the bus is moving, do not forget to fasten your seatbelt.
 
4. Do Not Get Down from a Moving Bus:
  • Getting down from a moving bus can cause accidents. Do not try to do that; you may get hurt.
  • Wait for the bus to stop before you get down.

Electric shock: A sudden jerk that happens when you touch plug points or switches improperly.

Cheat: Being dishonest to other people.

  • • Do you see traffic lights on the roads? Traffic lights have three different coloured lights— red, yellow, and green. All vehicles need to follow traffic lights on the road.
