What is a Possessive Noun ?

• A noun that shows someone’s ownership of something or a relationship with another personis called a possessive noun.
• A possessive noun is formed by adding apostrophes and the letter (’s) at the end of a noun to show ownership.

How to Write a Possessive Nouns Correctly?

To make words into possessive nouns, the structure of the word is as follows:

Examples:

a.

• This indicates the house belongs to Riya. Riya is the owner of the house.
• We made the noun (Riya) possessive by adding an apostrophe (‘) and the letter‘s’.
• We replaced the missing word with an apostrophe followed by the letter‘s’. The newly formed word will end with (‘s).

b.

• In the above example,the children belong to the parent. The word ‘couple’s’ is a possessive noun.
• The possessive noun (couple’s) is created by adding an apostrophe and the letter (‘s) at the end of the noun (couple).

Possessive Nouns Rules

We can make a singular noun possessive by adding an apostrophe (‘s) to the end of the noun.

2. We only add (’) to a plural noun that endswith ‘s’ to make it a possessive noun. The letter ‘s’ is not added at the end of the noun.

There is more than one dog. So, the noun is a plural noun. We didn’t add ‘s’ at the end of the plural noun because it ends with ‘s’.

b.

In the example, the noun ‘children’ is a plural noun. But we added an apostrophe and ‘s’ (‘s) because the plural noun doesn’t end with ‘s’.

If there are two or more people, places, or objects that share ownership of something or show possession, we’ll add an apostrophe (’) and the letter ‘s’ (’s) once and only with the last noun in the group.

Example:

The three children’s mothers are very kind. In order to make the nouns possessive, we used an apostrophe (’) and ‘s’ (‘s) at the end of the final noun (Vickey).

Common Mistakes:

Don’t add ’s with a plural pronoun that ends with ‘s’ to make it a possessive noun.

Example:

• This is the kids’ playroom.
• This is the kids’s playroom.
