Pronoun Definition

  • Pronouns are words used to replace a noun, so that nouns are not repeated in every sentence that follows. For example: ours, theirs, he, she, they, etc.
  • The words ‘ours’ and ‘theirs’ are possesive pronouns.

When do we use ‘Ours’ in a sentence?

  • The pronoun ‘ours’ is used to refer to the belongings associated with the speaker.
  • This is used when the thing belongs to the speaker along with one or a group of people.

  • Here, the woman is the speaker. She says that the house that belongs to her and her family (belonging to the speaker along with one or more than one person) is bigger than the boy’s house. Hence ours is used.

  • The pronoun ‘Theirs’ is used to refer to a thing or things belonging to or associated with two or more people or things previously mentioned.

Here, the girl is the speaker. She says that the two girls (two or more people) are examples of true friendship.

Common Mistakes

  1. Never use an apostrophe (‘) before the ‘s’ in the pronoun ‘Ours’ as it is incorrect

    Examples :

    Ours is a better plan than yours.

    Our's is a better plan than yours.

  2. Never use an apostrophe (‘) before the ‘s’ in the pronoun ‘Theirs’ as it is incorrect.

    Examples :

    That book is not ours but theirs.

    That book is not ours but their’s.
