Definition

  1. A suffix is a part of a word that is placed at the end of a word. Suffixes are used to make a new word.
  2. The word to which the suffix is added to change into a different word/ form is known as the root word.

Examples:

In the above word, ‘full’ is the suffix and ‘use’ is the base or main word.

Changes after Adding Suffixes

  1. A suffix has the ability to change the part of speech of a word into a different one.

         Examples:

     
 

         The word ‘move’ is actually a verb. But after adding the suffix ‘ment’, the word becomes ‘movement’ which is a noun.

 

     2. Some words change from verb form (in the present) to the verb in the continuous form after adding the suffix.

         Example:

     3. After adding suffix, the number of a noun can also change from singular to plural.

         Here, the word ‘dress’ is actually a singular noun. But after adding the suffix ‘es’, the word becomes ‘dresses’ which is a plural noun.

 

      4. They are used to change the tense of a verb or show the frequency of the action.

           Here, ‘learn’ is the base word and is in present tense. After adding the suffix ‘t’, the word becomes ‘learnt’ which is the past tense.

 

Types of Suffixes

There are two main types of suffixes: Consonant Suffixes and Vowel Suffixes.

 

 

A. Consonant Suffixes always begins with a consonant.

B. Vowel Suffixes always begins with a vowel.

Exceptions

 

  1. The spelling of some of the root words are changed when suffix is added to form new words. If the word ends with an ‘e’, you need to drop the ‘e’ while adding the suffix.

     B. In some words, the last consonant is repeated while adding the suffix.

      C. If the word ends with a ‘y’, then in some cases, the ‘y’ is omitted and ‘i’ is added to its place.
