Story Writing : Five Parts of A story and How to Organize the same

Definition:

  • A good story consists of five vital elements. They are the setting, the characters, the plot, the conflict, and the solution.
  • These five essential elements keep developing the story easily and allow the action to develop logically which makes it easy for the readers to follow.

Five Parts of a Story

Let us have a look at the details of the five parts of a story and how to organize the same.

  1. Setting: The setting is where and when the story takes place. It refers to the time and place of the story. It is actually the location of the action. Authors often use descriptions of scenery, landscape seasons, buildings, or weather to indicate the setting. It also helps the reader to visualize the scene.

    Example:

    Boy
    Boy
  2. Characters:Characters are the people, things, or animals the story is all about. The author introduces the characters in the story with information that helps the reader to visualize each person. Physical attributes and character traits are provided. Every story must have a main character. The main character helps to develop the plot and is the one who resolves the problem the story emphasizes upon. However, minor characters are also important as they give additional details or actions.

    Example:

    Boy
  3. Plot: The plot is the actual part upon which the story is based. A plot must have a beginning, middle, and end. It will help the reader to recognize the main action and follow the story from the beginning to the end.
  4. Conflict: Every story has a fight or a conflict to resolve. The plot is based on this conflict and the ways in which the characters try to resolve the big problem.

    Example:

    Boy
  5. Solution: Solution is how a character resolves a problem. The resolution must fit the story.

    Example:

    Boy

Common Mistakes

  1. Not planning the story before writing it. You must have a basic outline in order to develop it into a full story.
  2. Follow the order of writing a story. First is the setting, then the character, next is the plot, thereafter comes the conflict, and finally the solution.
