Definition:

  • Sequencing in a text means the order of events in a story.
  • It is used to put the events in a story in the order in which they occurred, from first to last.
  • There are clue words that help to figure out the sequence or the order. They are ‘first’, ‘next’, ‘then’, and ‘last’. These are called transition words.
  • Sequencing of events helps readers to retell a story in a proper order that enables the listener to visualize what actually happened in the text.
Example:

Let’s look at how the sequencing of events helps Sana to describe how to bake a cake.

First, I will gather all the ingredients like flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk, and cream.

Next, I will make the batter in a bowl by adding all the ingredients one by one and whisking them well.

Then, I put it in the oven to bake it for 45 minutes.

Finally, the cake is ready.

How to write a sequence of events?

  • Look at the pictures very carefully.
  • Observe what story the pictures are trying to portray.
  • Identify from the picture which incident comes at the beginning, middle, and end.
  • Form simple sentences that will match the picture.

Common Mistakes:

Look at the set of pictures very carefully and read the sentences very attentively to understand the sequence of the events. Don’t get confused between the transitive words.
