Definition
- Present tense sentences show an action that is happening at the moment or in the present.
- It can also indicate the time when an action takes place regularly or speak about universal truth.
Examples:
- She goes to school every day.
- Kolkata is the capital city of West Bengal.
Types of Present Tense
There are four types of present tense. They are as follows:
- Simple Present Tense
- The simple present tense is used when to indicate anything that occur habitually in the present.
- It is also used to express a fact, regular action, opinions, feelings and instructions.
Examples:
- I eat chicken sometimes.
- First read the passage and then answer the question below.
2. Present Perfect Tense

- Some activities that happened in the past and could repeat in the present. These sentences are written in the present perfect tense.
- The sentences in this tense also show a recently completed action.
Examples:
- She has left for Mumbai.
- Kelvin has just eaten an ice-cream.
3. Present Continuous Tense

- Sentences in this tense show the action in progress which is not completed.
- For an action that is continuous or in progress we use the present continuous tense to talk about the action happening now and the action that may continue in the future.
Examples:
- I am having my dinner.
- Jiten is searching for a new apartment.
In the example above, ‘I’ having my dinner as ‘I’ have not finished eating yet.
4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense
The present perfect continuous tense indicates an action started in the past and is continuing till the present time.
Example:
- Rohan has been studying in Orchids the International School since 2015.
This sentence shows that Rohan has gone to school since a time in the past until today and he will be studying at the same school.
- I have been watching that web series for quite some time.

- While mentioning general facts or universal truth do not forget to add the letter ‘s’ to the original form of the verb.

3. When the verb ends with ‘s’, ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘o’ then add ‘es’ to the original verb form.
Examples:
- She washes her clothes daily.
4. In case of personal pronouns like I, you, we, they, etc. there is no change to the verb when written in the simple present tense.
Examples:
- We eat breakfast at 8am every morning.
- They usually go to bed early.
