Pronoun Definition

  • A pronoun is used to replace a noun in a sentence.
  • Pronouns are short words used in a sentence so that the noun would not be used repeatedly.
  • Pronouns vary according to genders. For each person there are personal pronouns that can be used instead of their naming word. The pronouns used as follows:

Where to Use ‘His’?

  • The word ‘his’ is a third-person singular pronoun.
  • We use ‘his’ in a sentence to talk about something which belongs to or is related to the masculine gender, like a man, boy, or animal.

Examples:

  1. Rahul took my pencil, but his pen was with me.
  2. Ravi has a dog, and his name is Jack.

Where to Use ‘Her’?

  • The pronoun ‘her’ is a third-person singular pronoun.
  • We use ‘her’ in a sentence to talk about the feminine genders, such as a woman, girl, or animal.

Examples:

  1. Seema wrote a letter for her sister.
  2. She washed her clothes today.

Common Mistakes

A pronoun is used to replace a noun; thus, the gender has to match the noun. Thus, make sure the pronoun matches the gender of the noun.

Examples:

  1. Ram lives in a big house. His father also owns a car.

         (Pronoun ‘his’ is used in place of noun ‘Ram’).

     b. Kunal has a camera. His brother gave it to him.

     c. Sneha is younger than me. Her older sister is my classmate.

         (Pronoun ‘Her’ is used in place of Sneha).

     d. Rima bought a new toy. It is her. (Pronoun ‘Her’ is used in place of ‘Rima’, and ‘it’ is used             in place of ‘toy’).

Incorrect and Correct Usage:
