A poem is a piece of writing where the words are arranged in such a way that they rhyme with each other. Lines in a poem are often short.
Examples :
Mangoes
I like to eat a mango
No matter red, green, or yellow.
I want to eat the ones that are slightly red
Right before I go to bed.
In poems, the first two lines, “mango” and “yellow” rhyme with each other.
In the last two lines, ‘red’ and ‘bed’ rhyme.
There are various kinds of poetry that you will come across. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Examples :
The Rat
“I saw a rat,
It was chased by a cat”
Triplets are poems that comes with three lines that rhymes. If the last word present in all three lines rhyme, we can call this pattern as AAA. On the other hand, if the last word of the first- and third lines rhyme, we can call this pattern as ABA.
Example of AAA:
The Fat Cat
“Once lived a cat.
Who was very fat
It couldn’t even sit on the mat”
Here, the last words of all the sentences, ‘cat’, ‘fat’ and ‘mat’, rhyme with each other. Thus, it follows the AAA pattern.
Example of ABA:
Colours
“Painting gives me joy.
Colours, Brushes,
Some of the things that I enjoy”
Here, the last words of the first sentence, “joy” and the last word of the last sentence “enjoy” rhyme with each other. Thus, it follows the AAA pattern.
Common Mistake
Make sure the lines have meaning. Don’t use any words just to make the poem rhyme. The words should give the correct and complete meaning.
Example :
A Painting
“Painting gives me joy.
Hurricane, Earthquake,
Some of the things that I enjoy”
Here, the words “hurricane” and “earthquake” doesn’t make any sense in the poem.
