Concept : Introduction to Adverbs

Definition

  • An adverb is a word that modifies verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
  • It gives more information about the verb in the sentence.
  • All words are made from at least one syllable.
  • Adverbs could give more detail about time, manner, frequency and more such information.

Identify Adverbs

  1. The unique feature of adverbs is that most adverbs end with ‘ly’. It can be easily identified in a sentence.
  2. It is always placed near the verbs. Sometimes, adverbs are placed after the verb or at the end of the sentence. They could also show up before the verb in the sentence.

  1. Adverbs placed at the end of the sentence

    1. Adverbs showing more information on time are usually placed at the end of the sentence.
    2. Some adverbs found at the end of the sentence can also tell about the frequency of the verb taking place.

    B. Adverbs used along with verbs

    • Some adverbs that show more information about the place where the action happens are usually placed before or after the verb.
    • Few adverbs that give information about how something takes place are also placed before or after the verb.
  •                       i. The warriors fought bravely in the battle.
  •                       ii. At the beach, Sonali walked beside her sister.

Category of Adverbs

Adverbs are further divided into various types based on the type of information. Each type of adverb can show specific information about the verb, so it is important to know about the type of adverbs.

1. Adverb of Place

    An adverb of place explains where the action has taken place. It answers the question where  the action is performed. For example, across, through, under, sideways, upstairs, etc.

2. Adverb of Time

    When an adverb tells us when the action has been taken. It answers the question when is the  action performed. For example, early, tomorrow, yesterday, etc.

3. Adverb of Manner

    An adverb which expresses the way of action is called an adverb of manner. It answers the      question of how the action is performed. For example, loudly, slowly, nicely, etc.

4. Adverb of Frequency

    When an adverb shows how often action has occurred is called an adverb of frequency. For    instance, usually, never, always, daily, weekly, occasionally, sometimes, etc.

5. Adverb of Degree

    An adverb that expresses the level of activity in the sentence is called the adverb of degree. It  answers the question of how much is the action performed. For example, barely, deeply,  fairly, greatly, hardly, etc.

Common Error

Do not use ‘ly’ suffix for any adverb. Not all adverbs have ‘ly’ suffixes.

Example:

  1. We have all worked hard on the project.✅
  2. We all have worked hardly on the projects.❌

Concept : Adverb and its types - Adverbs of Time & Place

An adverb is a word that conveys more information about a verb in a given sentence. Adverb and its types include adverbs of time and place apart from others. Adverbs of time add or change the meaning of a sentence by telling us for how long, when and how frequently something happens. An adverb of place is used to indicate the location of the verb's activity. In this learning concept, students will learn:

Types of Adverbs

  • An adverb is a word that modifies (or gives more information) about a verb in a sentence. For example, she is dancing to a song gracefully.

    The adverb ‘gracefully’ modifies the verb ‘dance’ by giving us more information about how she danced.

  • Adverbs modify verbs by giving us information about certain aspects of verbs.

Adverbs Based on the above aspects, adverbs are divided into the following types.

A) Adverb of Time

Adverbs change or modifya sentence by telling us about the time when certain actions happen. These words are called adverbs of time.

Some common adverbs of time include words like afterwards, already, always, during, finally, late,lately, etc.

Examples:

B) Adverb of Place

  • The adverb of place provides information about the place where an action takes place.
  • Adverbs of place are words that answer the question ‘where?’ in the sentence.
  • Some common adverbs of place are words above, below, beneath, in, inside, into, everywhere, etc.

Examples:

Common Error

Both ‘never’ and ‘not’ are adverbs. Usage of ‘never’ in place of ‘not’ is incorrect as both the words show negation. Always use only one word.

Example:

a) I did not go to Kashmir last year.✅

b) I never went to Kashmir last year.❌

 

Concept : Adverb of Manner

In this chapter, students will study the adverb of manner along with its examples. They will also learn how an adverb is placed in a sentence. There are common mistakes that should be avoided while using them.

In this learning concept, the students will know about the following:

  • To identify the adverb of manner in a sentence.
  • To create adverbs from adjective by adding ly suffix words.

Adverb of Manner Definition

  • An adverb of manner is a word that describes how an action is carried out. It also shows the manner in which the action takes place.
  • Most adverbs end with the suffix –ly, such as carefully, slowly, hopefully, etc.There are other adverbs that do not have the -ly suffix, such as well, hard, fast, etc.
  • The adverb of manner normally is placed after the verb in the sentence.

Where are Adverbs placed in a Sentence?

Adverbs can be found near the verb or at the end of the sentence. In the first sentence given below, the word ‘happily’ is used after the verb ‘ran’. In the second sentence, it is used after the object of the sentence.

Examples:

  1. The child ran happily to his father.
  2. The child ran toward his father happily.

Formation of Adverbs from Adjectives

As most adverbs have the ‘ly’ suffix, it is necessary to learn how adverbs are framed using other words.

i. Adverbs can be formed simply by adding ‘ly’.

Examples:

ii. If an adjective ends with the letter ‘y’, replace the letter ‘y’ with an ‘i’ followed by a ‘ly.’

iii. If the adjective ends with ‘ic’ add ‘-ally’.

Exception:

Some adjectives do not change spelling when written as an adverb.

Common Mistakes:

  1. An adverb of manner cannot be written between a verb and its direct object so it is written at the end of the sentence.

         Example:

    • He ate the pizza greedily.
    • He ate greedily the pizza.

     2. The adverb must be placed either before the verb or at the end of the sentence.

          Example:

    • He gave us the food generously.
    • He gave us generously the food.
