Understanding Decimals and Percentages

What is a Decimal?

A decimal number represents a fraction using a decimal point (.). It consists of:

Example: 12.35

  • 12 → Whole number part

  • . (decimal point) → Separates the parts

  • 35 → Fractional part (35 hundredths)

Practice Questions

  1. Write 3.45 in words.

  2. What is the place value of 6 in 4.67?

  3. Convert 345/1000 into a decimal.

Comparing and Ordering Decimals

To compare decimal numbers, follow these steps:

  1. Compare the whole number parts.

  2. If the whole numbers are equal, compare the tenths place.

  3. If the tenths are the same, compare the hundredths place, and so on.

Example: Compare 12.45 and 12.456
12 = 12 (same whole number)
Compare tenths: 4 = 4 (same)
Compare hundredths: 5 = 5 (same)
Compare thousandths: 0 < 6 → 12.45 < 12.456

Trick: Add zeros to make decimals the same length.
12.45 = 12.450

Practice Questions

  1. Arrange in ascending order: 0.9, 0.75, 1.2, 0.08

  2. Which is greater: 3.407 or 3.47?

  3. Fill in the blank: 4.56 __ 4.560 (<, >, =)

Converting Fractions to Decimals and Percentages

A fraction, decimal, and percentage are different ways to express the same value.

Conversion Formulas

Fraction to Decimal: Numerator ÷ Denominator
Decimal to Percentage: Multiply by 100
Percentage to Decimal: Divide by 100

Example: Convert 3/4 to decimal and percentage.
Decimal: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
Percentage: 0.75 × 100 = 75%

Practice Questions

  1. Convert 2/5 into a decimal.

  2. Write 0.65 as a percentage.

  3. Convert 32% into a decimal.

Operations with Decimals

Addition & Subtraction of Decimals

Steps:
1. Align decimal points before adding or subtracting.
2. Add zeros to equalize decimal places.

Example: 23.45 + 6.70

23.45 + 6.70 = 30.15

Practice Questions:

  1. Add 4.56 + 7.4.

  2. Subtract 9.8 - 4.65.

  3. Solve 12.45 + 3.07 - 2.4.

Multiplication of Decimals

Steps:
1. Multiply normally, ignoring the decimal.
2. Count total decimal places and adjust the decimal in the final answer.

Example: 4.2 × 3.5
Ignore decimal: 42 × 35 = 1470
Place decimal: 14.70

Practice Questions:

  1. Multiply 3.2 × 4.5

  2. Find 6.75 × 2

  3. Solve 1.5 × 0.8

Division of Decimals

Steps:
1. Move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number.
2. Move the decimal point in the dividend by the same places.

Example: 4.56 ÷ 0.3
Multiply both by 10: 45.6 ÷ 3
Answer: 15.2

Practice Questions:

  1. Divide 8.4 ÷ 2.

  2. Solve 6.75 ÷ 0.5.

  3. Find 12.3 ÷ 3.

Real-Life Examples of Decimals and Percentages

  1. Shopping Discounts - A shirt costing ₹1000 with a 25% discount saves ₹250, making the final price ₹750.

  2. Sports Statistics - A cricketer has an average of 47.5 means he/she scores 47.5 runs per match.

  3. Fuel Consumption - A car giving 15.5 km per liter means it travels 15.5 km with 1 liter of fuel.

  4. Bank Interest - 5% interest on ₹10,000 gives ₹500 per year.

  5. Body Measurements - BMI uses height and weight, often with decimals like 24.8 kg/m².

  6. Cooking & Recipes - A recipe may require 0.75 cups of flour and 1.25 teaspoons of salt.

  7. Exams & Scores - If a student scores 85 out of 100, that’s 85% marks.
