<p dir="ltr">Sir Isaac Newton is probably the most popular scientist of physics. His work was actually the very foundation of classical mechanics, the branch in physics associated with the motion of bodies with forces acting upon them. Three laws of motion that bear his name describe how objects move in response to forces. These three laws play a big role in explaining everything from the motion of planets down to how machines work.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Newton is also credited with developing the theory of universal gravitation, namely that any mass attracts every other mass by a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. This law was able not only to describe the falling of objects to the ground but also the orbits of planets around the sun.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Apart from his mechanical and gravitational studies, Newton co-invented calculus, which is a subset field of mathematics that enables one to make a description of changes. This later proved to be instrumental in major fields such as physics, engineering, and economics.</p>

His ingenious theory of relativity is famously recognized for including not just a general theory but also a special theory, which revolutionized our understanding of space, time, and gravity. His special theory of relativity stated that time and space were not absolute entities but relative entities and totally interwoven in a four-dimensional space-time continuum. This theory was also embodied by the famous equation E=mc², describing mass and its equivalence to energy.</p>
<p dir="ltr">General relativity proposed by Einstein showed gravity as the curvature of space-time under mass and energy. This has been empirically confirmed through so many experiments, such as the bending of light around massive objects and on an expanding universe.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Besides his contribution to the field of relativity, Einstein substantially influenced quantum mechanics. His explanation of the photoelectric effect—to cause material to emit electrons—was the first evidence of quantized matter for the light in the universe. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for that work.</p>

He is best known for the Bohr model of the atom; the idea was that electrons orbit around the nucleus in quantized states. The model is a big jump from old models of an atom and it serves as a base to treat the behavior of electrons in an atom.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Additionally, he formed the groundwork for quantum mechanics in his studies based on quantum theory. Quantum mechanics represents another division of physics that discerns the actions of particles at the smallest scales: for instance, his principle of complementarity states that particles can display behavior of waves as well as particles, depending on the experiment. This is perhaps the leading principle in quantum mechanics.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Nobel Prize in Physics was given in 1922. His investigations persist as a fundamental impact in the exploration of the atomic world and development of the current physics paradigm.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Marie Curie discovered two elements, radium and polonium, as a result of her research on radioactivity, a term she also coined. In this way, she proved that radioactive elements were sending off radiation while breaking down, with an impact on the atomic structure of the elements from which these rays were emanating, while at the same time releasing energy in the process. Her discovery has been applied in science and in medicine to create radiation therapy to be used in the treatment of cancer, enlarging the fundamental basis of the atomic structure.</p>

What he is most known for is his invention of a now-appropriately-named set of Maxwell's equations that depict the fundamentals for varying electric and magnetic fields.</p>
<p dir="ltr">According to Maxwell's equations, electric and magnetic fields propagate as waves in space. Further, more than that, light is by itself nothing other than an electromagnetic wave. The unification of electricity, magnetism, and light into one single theory was a great achievement. This led to the further development of the concept of modern physics concerning the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">What is Photoelectric Effect?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Before getting into all the specifics, let's just start with a very simple question: &ldquo;What is photoelectric effect&rdquo;? You have this cool flashlight that you're shining on a metal plate. Of course, most interestingly, when light shines on the plate, it begins to emit very tiny electric charges or sparks. That is actually what we refer as the &ldquo;photoelectric effect&rdquo;.</p>
<p>Let's define photoelectric effect. The photoelectric effect is a process that shines light on a surface, which produces electrons and tiny particles carrying electricity. In other words, light makes things like metals into emitters of electricity!</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">How Does the Photoelectric Effect Work?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">We'll step through what is meant by the photoelectric effect definition.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">The Light Connection</h3>
<p dir="ltr">Light is made up of small energy units called photons. Photons can be visualized as small messengers carrying energy. If light falls on a metallic surface, the photons clash with the electrons present in the metal surface. Under certain conditions of energy carried by these photons, the <a href="https://www.orchidsinternationalschool.com/blog/electron">electrons</a> may be knocked out of the metal. As a result, there is a flow of electric charge, which we term electricity.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">Photon Energy and Electron Ejection</h3>
<p dir="ltr">Not all photons possess the same energy. Some are stronger than others and can thereby kick electrons out of the metal more effectively. If a photon's energy is too small it will not have the power to dislodge an electron. This is somewhat like trying to open a door that doesn't quite fit and requires a real shove to open. If one doesn't push hard enough, there is just not enough power to make the door budge!</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">The Role of Energy</h3>
<p dir="ltr">However, not all light can cause this photoelectric effect. The photons' energy must be such that it can kick out the electrons from the metal. If the energy is too low, then nothing happens at all; it's hypothetically equivalent to trying to knock down a door with a feather.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Laws of Photoelectric Effect</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Now, we turn our attention to the &ldquo;laws of photoelectric effect&rdquo;. They reveal to scientists exactly when, how, and also why the photoelectric effect occurs.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">First Law: The Light Must Have Enough Energy</h3>
<p dir="ltr">It necessitates that light must have at least a given amount of energy for the observation of the photoelectric effect. This amount of energy is referred to as "threshold energy." Photons lacking the given amount of energy cannot serve to detach electrons from the metal. In the same manner, closing a door demands some amount of energy. The same door will not shut if the right key is not placed and turned to that effect.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">Second Law: Number of Electrons Depends Upon Light Intensity</h3>
<p dir="ltr">The second law states that the number of electrons being emitted is dependent upon the intensity of light. The intensity here refers to the brightness of the light. If a person has a brighter light, then more photons hit the metal and knock more electrons out. However, if the light is low in intensity but has high energy, the effect might still happen with the emission of fewer electrons.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">Third Law: The Speed of Electrons Depends on Light Energy</h3>
<p dir="ltr">This kinetic energy can be controlled in many ways, but essentially, energy will be transferred from the light to the metals in the form of electrons, and the main idea behind this law is that the greater the amount of light energy from photons is, the larger the speed of emitted electrons will be. Stated differently, brighter light does not send the electrons flying faster; rather, higher energy light sends the electrons flying faster. Therefore, if you use a source of higher energy light, the electrons will zip away from the metal faster!</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Practical Use of the Photoelectric Effect</h2>
<p dir="ltr">You must be wondering how this &ldquo;photoelectric effect&rdquo; applies to our day-to-day life. So, here are some pretty cool examples.</p>
<h3 dir="ltr">Solar Panels</h3>
<p dir="ltr">Solar panels harness this photoelectric effect to convert sunlight into electricity. When sunlight photons hit the solar panels, they cause electrons in the material of the panel to move around. Orbiting around the nucleus are electrons; these zoom around in orbits much like the ways that planets orbit the sun. We call that the atomic structure of an atom. Because we cannot perceive atoms with our eyes, scientists have special tools that allow them to study atoms and learn about their amazing properties.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Structure of an atom- the term atomic structure denotes how the parts of an atom are put together. Like in every different house, the room and the walls are different, similarly different atoms are made up by their different parts. To understand, we would break it down to see what makes up an atom:</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Nucleus</strong>: This is the center of the atom; it would be the sun in terms of our solar system. It is compact and is composed of two types of particles: protons, and neutrons. The nucleus is highly small in relation to the atom but it contains nearly all the mass of the atom.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Protons</strong>: These are positively charged atomic nuclei, which each atomic number possesses. An atom is what it is due to the number of protons which are contained in it. If an atom contains one proton, it will be hydrogen; if it has six protons, it will be carbon. The number of protons is essential in the identification of the atom. The more the protons in an atom, the heavier and the more complex the atom is.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Neutrons</strong>: Neutrons are neutral, and carry no charge. They reside with the protons in the nucleus and contribute to the stability of the nucleus. Neutrons are like the adhesive that holds the nucleus together. Without neutrons, the protons would strongly repel each other and the nucleus would break apart.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><strong>Electrons</strong>: Elec-trons are negatively charged particles that whizz around the nucleus of an atom in areas called electron clouds or shells. Even though they have a negative charge, they don't crash into the nucleus because they are just moving so fast! Electrons are really, really smaller than protons and neutrons, and they race around the nucleus at amazing speeds. The arrangement of electrons within an atom's electron clouds or shells determines the atom's chemical properties. That would imply atoms have the greater effect of creating between themselves interactions.</p>

The Periodic Table is arranged according to an atomic number; therefore, you can easily get how many protons an element has if you look at its position on the table.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Knowing the atomic number of an element helps the scientist further understand the kind of atom they are dealing with and how that atom will behave in different situations. An example could be that elements that have similar atomic numbers often have similar properties; this is why the elements are grouped in the periodic table. The atomic number is amongst the most fundamental information about an atom since it can tell us what element it is and how it may react with another element.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">What is an Atomic Mass Unit?</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Now, according to that, let me explain to you what an atomic mass unit is, which is usually abbreviated as AMU. An atomic mass unit is used for measuring the minute substances of atoms. The reason behind this is that the atoms are so tiny, and their mass is also very tiny; it should be measured, so scientists derived a special unit which is the atomic mass unit.</p>
<p dir="ltr">One atomic mass unit is defined as one-twelfth the mass of a carbon-12 atom. Now, this probably sounds very confusing, but it's simply just giving us something with which to measure atoms. The reason the carbon-12 atom has been selected to be the standard is because it is an extremely stable and abundant isotope, which makes it a very good reference point to measure atomic masses.</p>

Electrons are so light that their masses are almost negligible in comparison to protons and neutrons. <p dir="ltr">Normally, what we refer to as the mass of the atom is just the sum of the masses of all protons and neutrons present within the nucleus, in atomic mass units, so as to obtain the atomic mass of that element. For example, the atomic mass of carbon is approximately 12 atomic mass units because it has six protons and six neutrons. The atomic mass gives an important insight into just how heavy one atom is compared to another atom.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The atomic mass unit is important in that it has enabled scientists to compare the masses of different atoms with much ease. Without the atomic mass unit, quite a number of elements in relation to each other would not have been understood. <h2 dir="ltr">John Dalton Born</h2>
<p dir="ltr">John Dalton was born on September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfield-a village in Cumberland, England. His family was poor, generally, unassuming weavers who had to struggle to make both ends meet. Considering the lowly state of their life, John Dalton's parents attached great importance to education and gave as much knowledge as possible to the children. John had an elder brother named Jonathan, who also became a teacher and took an active part in the early education of John.</p>
<p dir="ltr">As a young boy, John Dalton was enthusiastic about learning. He was much interested in Nature and the way things happened around him. His curiosity increased his exploration of the world around him through posing questions and finding explanations. Despite this, Dalton did not study at an advanced school but was intent on educating himself. He read tirelessly and performed experiments that involved simple apparatus, mostly from home.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">John Dalton&rsquo;s Early Life</h2>
<p dir="ltr">It was the love for learning that drove John Dalton into teaching at such an early age. At the tender age of 12, he worked as an assistant teacher in a worldly school. He went further to study such subjects as mathematics, meteorology-that is, the study of weather-and chemistry.</p>

Quakers adopted the way of life that would stress the simplicity of living and helping other people, and that influenced Dalton very much.
